Tourism Impacts and Issues

Credit: Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management

A survey of the dimensions, operations, and issues of the global tourism industry. Topics covered include: tourism supply and demand; the geographic, economic, and socio-cultural perspectives of travel; consumer behavior as it affects tourism; transportation and distribution systems; the segments of the industry (cruise lines; tour operations; attractions; government agencies) international and public policy; and trade organizations; technological impacts on tourism. Sustainable development and other key trends and new practices in tourism are also explored.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the semester, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the structure of the tourism industry.
  2. Describe the key trends and issues affecting global tourism and public policy.
  3. Apply the concepts and professional terms used by industry professionals in the conduct of daily business.
  4. Explain production and distribution channels for travel, market segments, types of destinations, and their impact on the industry.
  5. Differentiate between different types of tourism destinations, products and services, and infrastructure.
  6. Understand statistical references to measuring tourism.
