French to English Translation: An Introduction

Continuing Education: Foreign Languages, Translation, and Interpreting

This course is intended to give a thorough overview of the field of translation studies. Students learn how to use key translation resources, develop strategies, edit translated texts, and understand the major theoretical and historical landmarks of the field. Students translate academic documents, consumer-oriented texts, scientific and technical texts, material for the medical profession, legal and financial documents, literary publications, and the Web. Students learn to use search engines, dictionaries, glossaries, and parallel documents; learn about new translation technologies, including computer-assisted translation tools, terminology management tools, MT, etc., and practice translating a wide variety of documents from French into English.
