Reporting, Researching, and Writing the News

Continuing Education: Writing and Speech

Focus on the basic principles of news reporting with an emphasis on learning by doing. What is news and who defines it? How do you write news? Most sessions combine principle with practice and classroom discussion with in-class writing and outside assignments. Topics include determining the focus of the story, covering all the angles, interviewing, researching (including online research), organizing the material, finding and writing the lead, rewriting and editing, working on deadline, coping with controversy, and remaining objective.

Students must have a solid command of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
