This course surveys European painting of the late 19th century with reference to the social and political climate of the times. Following Courbet and Manet's precepts of Realism at mid-century, the Impressionists Monet, Renoir, Degas and others developed a passion for depicting the everyday world around them. Their work captures the changed landscape of Paris, the tensions of urban-industrial life, and evolving attitudes toward women. By the mid-1880s, a new generation of artists, including Seurat, Gauguin, Van Gogh, and Cezanne reacted against the Impressionists' aesthetic, opening up a range of possibilities to be further explored by artists in the 20th century.
