Paul Cezanne stands at a critical place among the tough realism of his acknowledged predecessor, Gustave Courbet; the innovative brushwork of his contemporary, Monet; and the radical imagery of Braque and Picasso. Learn about the uncompromising work of Courbet, the vivid color of Monet's direct strokes, the role each played in Cezanne's development as an artist, and the unmistakable path Cezanne paves for the advent of Cubism. Examine a wealth of landscapes and portraits in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum.
Two visits to the Museum of Modern Art are planned, to view the work of Cezanne, Braque, and Picasso. No grades issued.
