Arts Programs
From 1910 until the outbreak of World War I in Europe in 1914, European art was rocked by innovations that continue to resonate a century later among artists today. It was about 100 years ago that Picasso and Braque introduced Cubism and the idea of collage; Matisse liberated color, freeing it from its descriptive role; and Kandinsky created some of the earliest nonrepresentational, or abstract, painting. Explore these and other movements, including Italian Futurism and German Expressionism, in light of contemporary music, literature, and other creative and scientific advances.
