In order to correctly advise clients, appraisers need to be able to differentiate among common woods, such as oak, pine, walnut, and mahogany, as well as their more exotic cousins. Participants learn to use both physical and cultural clues to identify wood. Physical characteristics examined include pore size, resin canals, growth rings, rays, texture, and color. Attention is given to the historic uses of different species of wood in period furniture, and to the differences between handworked and machine-made pieces. Factors that may change the appearance of wood, such as milling, shrinkage, warping, and veneering are also discussed.
