Scientific techniques are essential for the identification, evaluation, maintenance, and restoration of works of art and antiquities as diverse as Jackson Pollock's paintings and Chinese Buddhist cave art. Examine the procedures that aid the appraiser, collector, and curator alike to determine essential information about a work. Traditional methods include radiocarbon dating, spectrometry, and chemical and pigment analysis, and look at cutting-edge scientific methods as well.
