Understanding Clocks for Appraisers

This course focuses on the elementary workings of a time clock, time and strike clocks, and how to recognize clocks with multiple functions. Compare and contrast American, English, and French examples of mantle, bracket, and tall case clocks and examine a chronology of notable case features for dating purposes. Scrutinize the dials to determine a piece¿s period or style and learn how to tell if a clock is missing any key mechanical components. Study movement swapping and what the appraiser must look for to determine this. Discuss spandrels, hands, finials, dials, and seat boards for dating purposes.
