Some of the most valuable paintings sold in recent years are European and American works from the 19th and 20th centuries from movements including impressionism, postimpressionism, and modernism, as well as the uniquely American Hudson River School, Ash Can Group, and abstract expressionism. This course explores methods for assessingthe value of paintings across this period and the phases of an artist¿s career. Students learn how condition, rarity, and questions of authenticity affect prices, and examine research tools for determiningvalue.A visit to a preeminent gallery of American art is included.
Counts as a five-session Appraisal Studies elective.
