Continuing Education:
Humanities and Performing Arts
Explore the rapid rise to prominence of the city where the Renaissance began. Modern ideas about individualism and citizenship emerged here, along with convictions about morality and the natural order. The turbulent history of the Florentine Republic anticipated many now familiar phenomena: labor unrest, the influence of money, the emergence of new elites at the expense of old ones, and the influence of religious fanaticism. This course covers politics and history and also the new civic architecture and art characteristic of the era. Examine such artists as Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo, and historical figures, such as Dante, Boccaccio, the Medici, and Machiavelli.
