This course is designed for students who have completed Mandarin IV or know the basic structures of the Chinese language and have a working vocabulary of about 1,000 words and expressions. Students improve reading and writing skills by studying Chinese character text--both the traditional version and the simplified form. Students work on their oral and aural skills and improve their communicative competence by conversing on everyday and academic subjects. They learn to use correct grammar and appropriate vocabulary in contexts, read and write longer paragraphs and essays using Chinese characters, and build the vocabulary necessary for higher-level study.
