Magic, Fabulous, and Surreal: Writing Fantastic Fiction

SPRING 2010
Continuing Education:
Writing and Speech
Are you writing outside conventional literary fiction? This workshop focuses on stories that provoke the imagination. How far can you go with your ideas? What kind of world are your characters living in? Even if you defy known science, you still have to accept some conventions of story telling, plot, and character while developing your world. We consider different types of fantastic fiction: soft or hard science fiction, fairy tales, the fable, and magic realism, and discuss examples from writers including Kelly Link, George Saunders, and Ray Bradbury. Students can make at least two submissions, and are given short homework assignments to explore the different genres.
