Continuing Education:
Writing and Speech
From Wharton's portraits of Old New York to Auster's panegyrics of contemporary Brooklyn, plenty of fine fiction has been written about the Big Apple. Whether you have a native's insight into this singular place or a newcomer's fascination with it, you probably have your own stories to tell about New York City. In this course we read fiction that takes place here and discuss how writers use the city as character, metaphor, or setting. Through exercises, students then write their own versions of the city. Like New York itself, one of these may grow into something larger and more complex than predicted.
