Continuing Education:
Writing and Speech
Learn how to write effective and engaging comic essays. Writing assignments develop the techniques that have made the comic essay one of the most popular genres of literature, intertwining the use of metaphor and simile, dialogue, character description, and exaggeration with moments of heartfelt sincerity. Read and analyze comic essays by current masters of the genre such as David Sedaris, Sarah Vowell, Augusten Burroughs, David Rakoff, and Nora Ephron. After the 10th session, students meet with the instructor for a one-on-one discussion of their work.
