In this class, students meet weekly in one of New York City's small-claims courts (evening sessions) to mediate cases referred by the court. Using a co-mediation model, work with a mentor to learn the practical skills a mediator needs to resolve cases. After an initial experience co-mediating with a mentor, conduct the entire mediation (with your mentor as an observer), including drafting any stipulations the parties may agree to that resolves their case. Students must make a commitment to attend all mediation sessions and are required to maintain a log of cases mediated. Each session includes one hour of discussion, critiquing, and skill-building, followed by two hours of real-time mediation.
