Any intelligent, well-organized person can easily learn indexing skills. Extensive mastery of other editing skills is not required. Learn to recognize significant concepts in books, journals, and other media and style your index accordingly. Understand how to organize information under appropriate headings and cross-reference headings; properly alphabetize, edit, and format an index; submit the final index to the client; solicit work; maintain useful working relationships with editors and authors; and set rates, bill for work, and track your invoices for payment.
