Editors are the first and most crucial link in the publishing chain. This course provides invaluable, practical information for aspiring and fledgling editors. Topics include where ideas come from, how to evaluate a proposal and pitch the project to publishing boards, negotiating with agents, working with the author through the writing process, basic line editing techniques, and the editor's ongoing role in the publishing process. Class assignments allow students to practice their editorial skills. The course concludes with a candid discussion of editorial career paths.
