Everyone in the book publishing industry can benefit from a basic understanding of the major legal issues publishers face daily. This course explains the standard book publishing contract, the finer points of agency contracts, work-for-hire agreements, and releases. The class analyzes copyright and trademark law, with a special look at the impact of new technology and the legal guidelines for publishing on the Internet, as well as the First Amendment, defamation and invasion of privacy, and the laws governing antitrust, price discrimination, and unfair competition. This course requires a working knowledge of publishing terms and concepts.
