This beginning sound design class gives students the ability to create multilayered soundtracks for their computer animations, graphics or live action video. Tailored for the beginner, it covers the basics of sound recording, editing, design, and final mixing. Students also learn to develop an appreciation for excellent sound design through examples by recognized experts in the field and their own and classmates' work. They develop their ear for sound just as they have been developingtheir eye for graphic design. The class consists of lecture, viewing sessions of examples, and hands-on tutorials. Students are expected to create soundtracks for videos that they already have or are supplied by the teacher outside of class. They are also expected to work together as teams, fostering the concept of collaboration upon which so much of the movie industry is based. The class focuses on three main topics: recording techniques and acoustics, editing, and final mixing.
