How do contemporary images in photography, film, television, and the many forms of digital imagery construct narratives of identity, culture, and meaning? The Language of Contemporary Images explores that question by approaching visual images as a language with a particular syntax, grammar and set of articulations which enable an almost infinite variety of signifying practices. Students will learn the relationship between production technologies and the fundamental principles organizing their imagery. By examining the interaction of structure, color, lighting, composition, camera movement, sound, editing, mise- en ?scene, montage and other technological innovations for photography, digital innovation, and film, students will become more skilled and attentive readers of contemporary visual culture in its historical context.
