Hospitality and Tourism Sales and Marketing

An examination of marketing and sales concepts as applied to the hospitality and tourism industries with an emphasis on competitive and brand analysis, segmentation, revenue management, customer relationship management, traditional and contemporary promotional tactics, and sales. Topics to be covered include: marketing principles and trends, sales strategies, market positioning, product and service development, advertising and public relations, the sales cycle, strategic planning, internet marketing, transient vs. group sales processes, and distribution channels.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the semester, students should be able to:

1. Explain basic marketing and sales principles.

2. Describe the role of market segmentation, product development, pricing, distribution, and the promotion mix in marketing.

3. Identify third party providers and their role in marketing hospitality and tourism products.

4. Analyze the impact of trends in brand development, customer relationship management and new technologies on the marketing process.

5. Differentiate the use of promotional and other sales strategies in the life cycle of hotel and tourism brands.

6. Differentiate marketing and sales functions in hospitality and tourism operations of various size and structure.
