The value of major sports events has continued to grow as these events have taken on "brand" status with consumers. This course will analyze the necessary components for the successful packaging of entertainment and sports events and explore opportunities to combine these events with local tourism attractions. In addition, the course provides an understanding of the marketing and sales aspects and challenges associated with producing major sports events and the growing importance of brand licensing and merchandising. Venues such as the collegiate sports championships, professional sports finals, major golf, horse racing and boxing events will be analyzed for past and potential successes. Topics include: special events marketing; negotiating licensing application agreements and endorsements; entertainment-sport venues and destinations; opportunities for developing innovative promotional and entertainment products for licensing and merchandising; and the commercialization of technology in sports.
