Graduate Student Affairs

GRADUATE STUDENT COUNCIL

The management of student affairs is entrusted to the students themselves. All students registered in a degree program participate in the election of Student Council officers each April. Student Council Leaders work hard to improve student life at SCPS, by acting as an advocate for students to faculty and administration, by serving as an information resource to students, and by supporting student clubs.

SCPS has an undergraduate student government and a graduate student government that oversees all club activities, provides funding to the academic clubs, and advocates for student concerns to the NYU and SCPS administration.

The SCPS Graduate Student Council was founded in 2005. Each master’s program has one representative voting on matters that impact all graduate programs, provides funding to graduate student clubs, and program events. The purpose of this governing organization is to represent all SCPS graduate students (graduate certificate and master’s) to the NYU Administration, to build a School community, to develop programs affecting student life and career services, and to oversee and fund graduate student organizations.

As a governing organization, the SCPS Graduate Student Council:

  1. Serves as a representative voice for the SCPS graduate student body by maintaining open lines of communication between students, Deans, administration, faculty (includes full-time and adjunct), alumni, and the New York University community on cross-program issues
  2. Offers cross-program networking opportunities for a wide range of students seeking to enrich their intellectual lives, further their careers, and enhance their professional qualifications
  3. Provides cross-program informational, social and educational events to build a student community
  4. Fairly distributes funds to SCPS graduate student organizations and ensures that all matters comply with university and legal regulations
