OFFICE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS
(OISS)
All international students register with OISS when they arrive and maintain close ties
throughout their stay at NYU. OISS assists international students with all matters of special
concern to them and serves as a referral source to other NYU offices and academic departments. OISS
sponsors programs and activities to help students adjust to the school and the city. The Office is
NYU’s liaison to the United States departments of State and Homeland Security. You may make an
appointment with an OISS advisor by calling the office at (212) 998-4720.

AMERICAN LANGUAGE INSTITUTE
ALI offers courses to help non-native English speaking students improve their language and
writing skills. If English is not your first language, you are strongly encouraged to visit ALI to
have your English language proficiency evaluated. The evaluation includes grammar, vocabulary,
listening comprehension, and composition. To get the testing schedule, or for more information,
call (212) 998-7040. Once tested, students register for ALI courses at the ALI offices. You cannot
register for ALI courses via ALBERT.

U WRITING CENTER
The Writing Center provides free services to all NYU students to improve writing skills. The
Center's staff works with students on specific writing assignments. Students are encouraged to take
advantage of the Writing Center’s walk-in hours. For more information, call (212) 998-8866.

BOBST LIBRARY
The Elmer Holmes Bobst Library is NYU's main library and one of its most valuable resources
for international students. Bobst has more than 3.4 million books, thousands of journal
subscriptions, videos, government documents, dissertations, English as a second language materials,
and more. Pamela Bloom is the Librarian for International Students, and is the Librarian Liaison

WASSERMAN CENTER FOR CAREER
DEVELOPMENT
The Wasserman Center for Career Development is NYU's comprehensive career center dedicated to
helping students explore careers, learn new skills, and gain valuable work experience to complement
academic training. In many cases, Wasserman assists international students with finding their
practical training in the U.S., after which they return to their home country to work for a U.S.
