NYU’s Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) provides comprehensive services and programs for international students, scholars, and their dependents. OISS can assist you as you make your plans for arrival at NYU and throughout your academic journey here.
You must check in with OISS within 10 days of your arrival in the United States, 561 La Guardia Place, (212) 998-4720, to confirm your visa status and to receive information about the OISS Orientation. Always bring your passport, I –94 and SEVIS I –20 when meeting an OISS advisor.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING YOUR IMMIGRATION STATUS. Report any change in your local address immediately.
Services provided by OISS include immigration support for international students eligible for NYU's sponsorship under the F-1 or J-1 visa classifications; advising services for international students, weekly immigration workshops, and a weekly electronic newsletter; information workshops given by immigration attorneys and non-resident alien tax specialists; programs and events for students and scholars; and an international alumni network.
Before you register for courses, you must meet with an academic advisor to plan your course of study and select the courses you will take in the next semester. Together, you will choose courses that meet the requirements of your program that you are qualified to take. Your advisor will provide you with a signed copy of your registration form listing the courses you will take and an access code for registration.
In general, your academic advisor should be consulted whenever you have questions about or are experiencing difficulties with your academic program. Any changes in the courses you select must also be approved by the academic advisor, including courses you wish to drop or add during the term. Meetings with a departmental advisor can be scheduled through your program office.
If your visa status is F-1 or J-1, you are required to register for full-time study, 12 credits or more unless you are taking courses at ALI.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
If English is your second language or if you did not graduate from a college or university where English was the language of instruction, it will be necessary to evaluate your proficiency in English. It is your responsibility to be proficient in English in order to meet academic course requirements. Before meeting the International Student Coordinator, call the American Language Institute (ALI) for an appointment, 48 Cooper Square, Room 200, (212) 998-7040. The evaluation will cost a fee and it will take approximately two hours. The staff at ALI will provide you with a report for the Student Services Staff as soon as the test is over.
Courses taken at ALI are designed to improve your proficiency in English; they do not count as credits toward degree requirements. If you are required to take classes at the ALI, it may take more time than you had originally expected to finish your required studies, and there will be additional tuition charges. If you are attending NYU as an F-1 or J-1 student, you must obtain permission from OISS in order to register for an ALI course in your first semester while you are also registered for at least 6 academic credits in your program. After your first semester (if an F-1 or J-1 visa holder) you must register for at least 12 credits as well as whatever ALI course your academic program requires.
