Master’s (MS) in Professional Writing Curriculum

CURRICULUM

The MS in Professional Writing curriculum is comprised of a combination of courses, projects, and real-life applications and provides students with a well-rounded education preparing them for their future careers.

CORE CURRICULUM: Core courses build your professional writing foundation by focusing on key writing and communication skills; delving into design, professional contexts, and digital spaces; and teaching you to write for a target audience while measuring your impact.

ELECTIVES: Elective courses provide industry specific knowledge allowing you to develop a nuanced understanding of areas of interest that support your personal professional writing goals.

INTERNSHIP OR DIRECTED STUDY: You can select a professional Internship or a mock-freelance directed study as part of your required course work.

THESIS PROJECT AND DIGITAL WRITING PORTFOLIO: In your final semester, you will complete a thesis project and a digital writing portfolio. Both assignments showcase your applied writing skills and proven abilities.

The Malkemes Scholarship is available to MS in Professional Writing and MS in Translation and Interpreting students beginning their graduate studies in these two fully online, innovative degree programs. The award aims to support students entering either program with a focus on work that advances issues of equity and inclusion and will cover the cost of one 3-credit course in either program ($7000 per award).

Students receiving tuition remission from NYU are not eligible for Malkemes Scholarships. New students will have the opportunity to apply once they have received their NYU SPS admissions letter.

Application deadlines are August 15 or Jan 3. The scholarship is available to full- or part-time students. We encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds and professional interests.
