Process for Requesting Early Review and/or a Degree Exception

Process for Requesting Early Review and/or a Degree Exception for the Promotion of SPS CCF

The Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion, and Grievance policy specifies that faculty applying for promotion “should have spent at least six years at the” current rank for all promotional ranks. The policy further notes, however, “any faculty member...has the option to request review for promotion [to the next rank] earlier if the individual can demonstrate exceptional achievements.” Additionally, the policy notes that faculty applying for promotion to Associate or Full Professor (Clinical) “ordinarily should hold an advanced degree (terminal in their field or discipline)” and that faculty applying for promotion to Senior Language Lecturer “ordinarily should hold a relevant advanced degree.”

Faculty requesting early review for promotion or applying for promotion while not holding an equivalent or higher degree should first speak with their academic unit leader about this option. The academic unit leader should assess if the faculty member is able to “demonstrate exceptional achievements” in all other criteria. If the academic unit leader is in support of early consideration or consideration for faculty not holding an equivalent or higher degree, the academic unit leader should submit a formal request in the form of a letter to the SPS Dean via the Office of Faculty Affairs (sps.facultyaffairs@nyu.edu). This formal letter should clearly outline the faculty member’s exceptional achievement in all other criteria as outlined in the policy. Should the SPS Dean approve a request, the faculty member may submit their promotion portfolio and the approval notice will be appended to their materials in Interfolio by the Office of Faculty Affairs. A promotion case requiring such a request may not move forward without approval from the SPS Dean. Approval of a waiver does not imply or guarantee approval of promotion.

NOTE: Requests for early review or degree exception should ideally be submitted as soon as possible in order to avoid any delays in the process.
