NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Publishing Announces New Scholarship Awards to Advance Diversity and Inclusion in Publishing

The Simon & Schuster Carolyn Kroll Reidy Memorial Scholarship, Penguin Random House Scholarship, and Macmillan Scholarship Will Support Selected Students Who Attend the Center’s Summer Publishing Institute

NEW YORK, February 9, 2021—Thanks to its extensive connections in the publishing industry, the NYU School of Professional Studies (NYU SPS) Center for Publishing has announced new scholarship awards this year, which will foster greater diversity in the publishing industry and enable college juniors and seniors, as well as recent college graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in publishing, with the opportunity to attend its Summer Publishing Institute (SPI). The Summer Publishing Institute, now in its 43rd year, is a renowned, six-week summer intensive that provides pathways to publishing careers and immerses students in the worlds of book publishing and digital/magazine media. Similar to last summer’s program, this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the program, which combines workshops, strategy sessions, and presentations by some of the leading figures in publishing, will take place virtually over three weeks, from June 7 to June 25.

The Carolyn Kroll Reidy Memorial Scholarship, established by Simon & Schuster; the Penguin Random House Scholarship, and the Macmillan Scholarship have each been created through the Center for Publishing to provide funding in support of the Center’s mission to play a leading role in diversifying the next generation of publishing professionals.

The creation of these scholarships is an important step forward in opening new doors to careers in publishing for talented young individuals across all ethnic and racial backgrounds. As publishing and media companies strive for greater diversity in the workplace, it is critical to address these goals in the earliest stages of career development. Publishing education programs such as SPI are designed to do just that—nurture innate talent. The scholarships will help to make early professional development in the field of publishing possible for individuals who might normally not have access to this opportunity. Additionally, already established scholarship support from the Hearst Foundation and the Women’s Media Group is ongoing.

“We are so grateful to these organizations and publishers for supporting the Summer Publishing Institute and for their commitment to diversity and inclusion within the book publishing industry,” noted Andrea Chambers, executive director, NYU SPS Center for Publishing. “It is important to create opportunities for young people from all groups who are eager to learn more about publishing and bring their talents to the industry.
