Initial Faculty Appointment

Introduction

All full-time faculty must meet the requirements outlined in the Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion, and Grievance Policy. All adjunct faculty must meet the requirements outlined in the Credentials for Initial Assignment of Rank for Adjunct Faculty.

Base Rank

Dean's approval is not required for assignment of base rank.  Base rank is as follows:

  • for adjunct faculty, base rank is adjunct instructor;
  • for full-time faculty, base rank is Clinical Assistant Professor.

Elevated Rank

For initial appointment at elevated rank, which is any appointment above base rank, additional review and approval is required. Candidates seeking elevated rank are encouraged to speak with the academic leader of the unit prior to initiating a request. Academic leaders or candidates should contact the SPS Office of Faculty Affairs (sps.facultyaffairs@nyu.edu) indicating their intent to seek elevated rank. Upon receipt, the Office of Faculty Affairs will initiate a case in Interfolio, which will be shared with the candidate to submit all required materials. The elevated rank request will be reviewed by the academic leader, the Rank, Title, and Privilege (RTP) Committee, and the SPS Dean.

If the candidate does not meet all the required credentials for appointment at the requested elevated rank, a waiver of credentials is required before the case can be initiated in Interfolio. (For full-time faculty, see Process for Requesting Early Review and/or a Degree Exception. For adjunct faculty, see Credentials for Initial Assignment of Rank for Adjunct Faculty, Section 5.0 Waiver of Required Credentials

Note that a request for elevated rank must be prepared and submitted even if the individual holds that rank at another institution.

Offers of appointment at elevated rank cannot be made without official approval.

Additional Information

Holding a Bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement for hiring any faculty member at base or elevated rank. If a candidate does not hold a Bachelor’s degree, a  Degree Exception Form with supporting documentation as indicated on the form must be submitted to the Dean for approval.

Please contact the Office of Faculty Affairs (sps.facultyaffairs@nyu.edu) for a Degree Exception Form, if required.

Rank is maintained if an individual moves from adjunct to full-time faculty.
